CURL teams qualify for playoffs at OUA Championships
Laurier: 4 UOIT: 2
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (February 18, 2018) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s and women’s teams will advance to the quarter-finals of the OUA Championships on Sunday evening despite each posting a loss in their final draw of round robin play Sunday morning.

Laurier’s men’s team, skipped by Matt Hall of Kitchener, Ont., dropped their second consecutive 6-5 decision as they lost to the Laurentian Voyageurs in their final draw.

Hall, facing off against a familiar foe in Laurentian skip Tanner Horgan, who also competed at this year’s Canadian Junior Championships, was unable to best his counterpart on Sunday morning. The Voyageurs scored two in the first, fourth and sixth ends and despite a steal of one by Laurier in the eighth, it wasn’t enough to force extra ends.

The Hawks also lost to McMaster 6-5 on Saturday night after picking up a 4-2 win over UOIT Saturday morning. The results leave Laurier fourth in Pool B with a 3-3 record and they will cross over to face the top seed in Pool A on Sunday evening.

Laurier’s women’s team, led by skip Kaitlin Jewer of Ajax, Ont., also lost their final game of round robin play as they suffered a 6-2 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues, the top seed in Pool A.

In a matchup that featured twin sisters Bridget Ribau (Laurier) of Oakville, Ont., and Sabrina (Toronto), going head-to-head, it was the Blues that took control of the match with a steal of three in the third end and a steal of one in the fourth. They would go on to hand the Hawks a 6-2 defeat, leaving Laurier (4-3) as the fourth seed in Pool A.

The women, who picked up two wins on Day 3 over UOIT and Ryerson to put themselves in a comfortable position to advance, will also cross over in the quarter-finals to play the top seed in Pool B.

Opponents for both the men’s and women’s teams will be determined following the final draw of round robin play which gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
