CURL teams sit with two wins each after Day 2 of OUAs
Laurier: 7 Toronto: 4
SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. (February 16, 2018) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s and women’s curling teams were each able to record a win on Day 2 of the OUA Championships, hosted by the Algoma Thunderbirds and the Community First Curling Centre.

Laurier’s women, skipped by Kaitlin Jewer of Ajax, Ont., dropped their opener of the day, losing 8-1 to the 2017 U SPORTS silver medalists, the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

However, the Hawks were quick to bounce back in the late draw of the day as they rolled to a 10-2 victory over the host Thunderbirds.

Laurier scored two in the opening end before stealing two more in the second, three in the third and three in the fourth to take firm control of the match. Algoma scored singles in the fifth and sixth ends before shaking ends to end the game.

Sitting at 2-2 after Day 2 leaves Laurier in a four-way tie for third place in Pool A, even with Lakehead, the Ryerson Rams and the UOIT Ridgebacks. The Queen’s Gaels lead the Pool A standings at 4-0 while the Toronto Varsity Blues sit in second at 3-1.

In men’s action, Laurier, skipped by Matt Hall of Kitchener, Ont., played just once on Day 2 as they took on the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Hawks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as they scored twice with the hammer in the opening end before stealing one in the second.

After Toronto responded with a deuce in the third, the purple and gold added singles in the fourth and fifth ends to take control of the match.

The Blues pulled to within one in the sixth end but after the Hawks blanked in the seventh, Laurier scored two in the eighth with hammer to secure the win.

The victory moved Laurier to 2-1 for the tournament as they sit in second place in the Pool B standings, trailing only the Western Mustangs who sit in first place with a 4-0 record.

Action continues for the Hawks on Day 3 with the women facing Ryerson (2-2) and UOIT (2-2) in a pair of games that could determine who advances to the playoffs.

As for the men, they take on UOIT (1-2) and McMaster (1-2) as they look to secure their spot in the quarter-finals.
