Laurier: 1 Brock - Game 2: 2
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (February 16, 2018) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team had their season come to an abrupt end on Friday night as they were eliminated from the OUA playoffs after a 2-1 loss to the Brock Badgers in Game 2 of their best-of-three series.
Needing a win after losing the opener on home ice 3-0 on Wednesday night, the fourth-seeded Hawks got the start they wanted as Andrew Fritsch
of Brantford, Ont., converted on a powerplay midway through the first period.
However, Brock, the fifth seed in the OUA West division, snatched momentum back from the purple and gold when Matt MacLeod of Niagara Falls, Ont., scored late in the frame to send the teams to the dressing rooms tied 1-1.
The Badgers would go ahead on the eventual game-winner late in the second period as Dexter Weber of New Dundee, Ont., blasted home a shot on a 5-on-3 powerplay to give the home team the lead.
Laurier would have their chances to tie the game in the third period as they were handed three powerplay opportunities by the Badgers but were unable to convert as Badgers netminder Clint Windsor of Hamilton, shut them down each time.
Windsor would go on to finish the game with 37 saves to pick up the win as he was the clear difference in the series, stopping 75 of the 76 shots he faced.Colin Furlong
of Cambridge, Ont., took the loss in net for Laurier finishing with 23 saves.
The defeat marks the fifth consecutive playoff series the Hawks have lost with their last playoff round victory coming back in the 2010-11 campaign.
