Laurier: 7 Western: 4
WATERLOO, Ont. (February 12, 2018) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks curling teams hosted the Laurier Invitational, a one-day bonspiel, this past weekend at the KW Granite Club in preparation for the OUA Championships this week in Sault Ste. Marie.
Laurier’s men’s team, skipped by Matt Hall
of Kitchener, Ont., looked in fine form in the lead up to their defence of last year’s conference title as they went 3-0. The Hawks opened play on Saturday with a 7-4 win over Western and followed that up with a 7-1 victory over Laurier’s mixed team. They closed out the day with a convincing 9-1 win over Ryerson, two weeks after losing to the Rams at the McMaster Invitational.
The women’s team, skipped by Kaitlin Jewer
of Ajax, Ont., didn’t quite enjoy the same level of success as they went 1-2 against OUA competition. Laurier lost their first two games 6-3 to Ryerson and 7-4 to Guelph, before rebounding to defeat Waterloo 5-3.
In the men’s competition, Laurier also had their junior varsity team competing as well as their mixed team. The junior varsity team, skipped by Graham Singer
of Etobicoke, Ont., went winless dropping all three of their games while the mixed team, skipped by Tye Juniper
of Chatham, Ont., went 1-2, picking up their lone win against the Hawks’ junior varsity squad.
Laurier’s varsity squads now turn their focus to the OUA Championships, hosted by the Algoma Thunderbirds, beginning on Thursday, February 15.
Stay tuned for a complete preview of the championships.
