Golden Hawks Olympic connections for PyeongChang 2018
WATERLOO, Ont. (February 6, 2018) - Three former Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks student-athletes will be stepping onto the world stage for the next two and a half weeks as the 2018 Winter Olympics get underway in PyeongChang, South Korea starting on Wednesday.

Representing Canada in curling will be former Laurier teammates John Morris and Brent Laing, who will compete in the mixed doubles and men’s competitions respectively, while women’s hockey alumna Danelle Im will suit up for Korea.

Morris will be the first athlete to begin competition as he and partner Kaitlyn Lawes will open mixed doubles play on Wednesday, February 7 at 7 p.m. ET when they take on Norway. Morris and Lawes will play a complete round robin schedule, also facing USA, China, Finland, Switzerland, Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) and Korea, before semifinals and medal games on February 11, 12 and 13.

Meanwhile, Laing and Team Kevin Koe, representing Canada in men’s competition, get underway on Wednesday, February 14 at 7 p.m. ET when they face Italy in their first game of the round robin. Canada will also have matches against Great Britain, Norway, Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, Japan and Denmark prior to the semifinals and medal games. Semifinals will be played on Thursday, February 22 at 6 a.m. ET with medal games going on Friday, February 23 at 1:35 a.m. ET.

As for Im, she is a member of the historic Korea women’s hockey team that will have representatives from both South and North Korea on their roster. Korea will open the Olympics on Saturday, February 10 at 7:10 a.m. ET against Switzerland before facing Sweden and Japan in Group B round robin play.

Other Golden Hawk connections at the Games include former women’s hockey player and coach Cheryl Pounder working with CBC as a reporter for women’s hockey while former men’s curler and men’s rugby player Paul Webster is serving as Canada’s Olympic team leader for curling.

Finally, a number of former speakers from Laurier’s Outstanding Women of Laurier event will be participating in the Games in a variety of capacities. 

2015 keynote speakers Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue will be back competing for Canada in the ice dance competition.

2017 keynote speaker Karina LeBlanc, 2013 keynote speaker Kelly VanderBeek and 2012 keynote speaker Cassie Campbell-Pascall are all a part of CBC’s broadcast team with LeBlanc reporting on luge events, Campbell-Pascall serving as an analyst for women’s hockey and VanderBeek serving as a co-host for Olympic Games Overnight.
