CURL teams each pick up three wins at Brock Invitational
Laurier: 6 Waterloo: 6
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (January 22, 2018) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s and women’s curling teams competed in their first invitational bonspiel of the season this past weekend at the Brock Invitational hosted at the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club and the St. Catharines Curling Centre.

Both Laurier rinks finished with 3-1-1 records for their weekend with Laurier’s men qualifying for the championship bracket thanks to a win and two draws during round robin play on Saturday.

The men, who featured a makeshift lineup of Connor Lawes of Sundridge, Ont., at skip along with Graham Singer of Etobicoke, Ont., at vice, Kenny Malcolmson of Toronto, at second and Zachary Cohen of Chatham, Ont., at lead, opened the bonspiel with a 6-6 tie against the Waterloo Warriors before knocking off Rochester IT 8-1 and the Brock Badgers junior Varsity team 4-1 to qualify for the playoff round.

Facing the Trent Excalibur in the semifinals, Laurier scored two in the third end to grab a 2-0 lead. After Trent cut the advantage to one, the Hawks scored singles in the fifth and sixth ends and then ran the Excalibur out of rocks in the eighth to win 4-2 to advance to the final against McMaster.

The final was a high scoring affair with both the Hawks and Marauders scoring three in the third and sixth ends respectively. However, the Marauders held the advantage going to the last end and ran Laurier out of rocks to win 6-5.

Meanwhile, the women, who featured their full varsity lineup including skip Kaitlin Jewer of Ajax, Ont., vice Riley Sandham of St. Catharines, Ont., second Kelly Middaugh of Victoria Harbour, Ont., and lead Bridget Ribau of Oakville, Ont., went 1-1-1 in the round robin as they tied Waterloo 6-6, lost 6-5 to the Toronto Varsity Blues and defeated the host Brock Badgers 5-1.

In the consolation side of the bonspiel, the Hawks rolled to a 6-1 win over McMaster and a 7-1 decision over Brock as they won their final three games of the event.

Laurier’s curling teams will be back in action this weekend for their final invitational bonspiel before the OUA Championships next month as they travel to Hamilton for the McMaster Invitational on Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28.
