Two WCURL alum capture 2018 Ontario Scotties Championship
WHITBY, Ont. (January 18, 2018) - A pair of Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s curling alumni will represent Ontario at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts beginning later this month in Penticton, B.C., after winning the 2018 Ontario Scotties tournament this past weekend at Whitby Curling Club.

Team Duncan, skipped by two-time CIS Champion Hollie Duncan (nee Nichol), and also featuring two-time CIS Champion Cheryl Kreviazuk at second, knocked off Team Inglis, skipped by Duncan’s former teammate at Laurier Danielle Inglis, 10-7 in the final this past Sunday.

The final between the two rinks was a back and forth affair before Duncan scored four in the seventh end, opening the largest score differential of the match. Duncan then maintained the pressure with a steal of one in the eighth. After surrendering two in the ninth to Inglis, Duncan drew the four-foot with her last rock in the tenth for the 10-7 victory and ultimately, the championship.

For Duncan, who captured back-to-back CIS Championships as skip of the Golden Hawks in 2007-08 and 2008-09, it marks her first Ontario title as a skip and first trip to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. As for Kreviazuk, the victory sends her back to the national women’s curling championship for the second consecutive year after she served as an alternate for Team Homan, who won the championship, last year.

Following the victory, Team Duncan announced that Inglis, who played with Duncan at Laurier from 2007 to 2009, would serve as the team’s alternate and coach in Penticton, sending three former Golden Hawks to the national championship wearing the trillium and representing Ontario from January 27 - February 4.
