GUELPH, Ont. (January 11, 2017) - On Wednesday evening, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team lost their closest game of the 2017-2018 season as they fell 64-63 to the Guelph Gryphons.

Following two-made free throws by Laurier guard Nicole Morrison (Hamilton, Ont.) to tie the game with just over ten seconds left, Guelph Gryphons guard Megan Brenkel (Thornhill, Ont.) was fouled at the other end. Brenkel converted on one of her two free throw attempts, providing what would end up being the game-winning basket as the Hawks failed to score on the other end in the following sequence.

Morrison was the high-scorer for the game. The fifth-year guard finished with 24 points, a team-high six assists and brought down seven rebounds. JILL CONDRON led the team in rebounding by collecting 10 boards. The Oakville, Ont., native also contributed with 12 points, picking up her first double-double of the season.

For Guelph, four players recorded double-digit points. Burke Bechard (Dover Centre, Ont.) scored 16, Brenkel provided 14, Quincy Sickles-Jarvis (London, Ont.) added 12, while Ivana Vujadinovic (Burlington, Ont.) chipped in with 10.

With the win, the Gryphons move ahead of the Hawks in the standings. Both teams now have a record of 6-7, but the Gryphons possess the head-to-head tiebreaker and now hold the fifth position while the purple and gold move down to sixth.

Up next for the Hawks is a matchup against the No. 10 McMaster Marauders on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m. in Hamilton.
