WATERLOO, Ont. (January 8, 2018) - Men's basketball guard Tevaun Kokko
of Markham, Ont., and women’s hockey goalie Hannah Miller
of Georgetown, Ont., have been announced as this week’s Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 7th, 2018.
Kokko, a second year arts major, was on an unmistakable presence on the court this past weekend. He scored a career-high 30 points off the bench as he shot 10-for-20 from the field and 6-for-10 from three-point range, alongside six rebounds and two assists to guide Laurier to a 98-91 win over Windsor, snapping their five-game losing skid. When the purple and gold faced Western on Friday, Kokko secured 22 points, three rebounds and four assists in a last-second 78-76 lossto the Mustangs. His strong efforts on the court has moved him into third in the OUA for scoring at 21.5 points per game.
This is Kokko’s fourth time earning the Male Athlete of the Week honours and first time this season.
Miller, a rookie in her first year as a communication studies major, has been a force to be reckoned with between the pipes for Laurier this season. Although the Hawks suffered a 3-1 loss to the No. 8 Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday, Miller was stong in goal, stopping 27 of the 30 shots she faced. In Sunday’s game against Ryerson, Miller dominated in net stopping all 44 shots for her second career shutout in an eventual 1-0 shootout loss. With these strong performances, Miller moves into first in the OUA for save percentage with an outstanding 0.956 mark and fourth in the OUA for goals against average at 1.45 goals.
This is Miller’s second time earning the Female Athlete of the Week honoursand second time this season.
