Laurier: 1 RYERSON: 7
WATERLOO, Ont. (January 5, 2018) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team stumbled out of the gate in 2018 on Friday evening as they were unable to interrupt the No. 10 Ryerson Rams now four-game winning streak, losing 7-1.
With both teams entering the game neck-and-neck in the OUA West Division standings, it was the Rams (12-4-1) own Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.) who managed to score the first goal on the night.
The Hawks (10-5-2) answered shortly thereafter as Anthony Sorrentino
(Woodbridge, Ont.) found the back of the net on a powerplay off a feed from Danny Hanlon
(Waterloo, Ont.) and Brandon Robinson
(Pickering, Ont.) to tie the game at one.
Heading into the second frame, the Hawks struggled to deny the Rams second chance opportunities which resulted in Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) and Vince Figliomeni (Bolton, Ont.) picking up the puck off a pad save and score bringing the Rams' to a 3-1 lead.
Ryerson continued to pour on the offence in the final frame, scoring four more times to hand Laurier a 7-1 loss.
The Hawks’ goalie Chris Festarini
(Oakville, Ont.) allowed seven goals on 35 shots.
On the other side of the ice, Ryerson’s goalie Taylor Dupuis (New Liskeard, Ont.) turned aside 21 of the 20 shots sent his way to pick up the win.
Mistele paced the Rams offensive effort with a goal and two assists.
Next up the Hawks will face the Waterloo Warriors (5-8-3) on Saturday, January 6 at the Columbia Ice Field at 7:00 p.m. The highly anticipated game will be broadcasted live on OUA.tv as the Hawks will have the opportunity to capture the inaugural Battle of Waterloo trophy.Written by: MEGHAN DANIELS
