The Low Down
To kick off the second half of their 2017/2018 season, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team is slated to battle against the Western Mustangs and the Windsor Lancers. On Friday, the third place Hawks will drive westward on the 401 to London for a 6:00 pm tilt against the Mustangs and return to Waterloo the following day for a showdown with the Lancers at the Athletic Complex.

The Hawks finished the 2017 portion of their regular season in early December, taking their 6-4 record with them into 2018. The team stayed busy over the winter-break, participating in an exhibition match at the Goldring Centre in Toronto against the Victoria Vikes. In a game, the Hawks lost 65-50 but every player received ample playing time, with coach PAUL FALCO opting to get 13 Hawks on the court. No Golden Hawk played less than eight minutes, helping some younger players gain valuable experience.

In relation to Laurier’s third spot in the OUA West standings, the Hawks’ two upcoming opponents have been on opposite ends of the spectrum. Currently, Western holds the fifth position in the OUA West standings with a 6-5 record. However, their recent play would suggest that they’re due for a rise in the second half of the season. The Mustangs have won three of their last four contests and the only loss was a close 71-68 result against the ninth-ranked team in the country, the 9-1 Queen’s Gaels.

The Lancers, meanwhile, through exceptional performances, have earned themselves a spot amongst the U SPORTS Top 10, being declared the seventh best team in the nation in the most recent rankings. Windsor possesses an 8-3 record, with its only losses coming against two other Top 10 teams, the Carleton Ravens (1) and the Queen’s Gaels (9), as well as a tough defeat on the road at McMaster.

Need to Know
- Laurier defeated Western in both games in which the two schools played against each other last season
- The Hawks will look to overcome their recent struggles against the Lancers, who have defeated them in 18 of the previous 19 head-to-head matchups
