Laurier: 4 Brock: 7
This wasn't the way the Hawks had hoped to open up their first OUA baseball season. Coming into the opening weekend, the Hawks were optimistic about their chances. However, drawing two tough opponents on Saturday and Sunday didn't pose well for the Golden Hawks.
On Saturday, the Hawks travelled to Brock, a 2 time national champion. The first game was a close one as Laurier lost in extra innings 8-5. The second game started out promising, with the Hawks jumping out to a 7-0 lead after one inning. That lead was short lived and eventually they were beaten 14-9 by the Badgers. Offensively, John Bell
was 4-8 on the day with 3 doubles. SCOTT BALLANTYNE
pitched a great opening game for the Hawks keeping the Brock bats quit for 5 innings.
On Sunday, Western rolled into town with a 2-0 record. Game one was a close game until the 5th when Western exploded for 5 runs and eventually won the game 12-1. In game 2, things started off with a bang as Scott Smith
deposited a pitch into deep left field for a quick 3-0 lead. However, like in the second game at Brock, the Hawks couldn't hold the lead and lost 8-3.
The next game for the Golden Hawks is on Wednesday night againt cross town rivals Waterloo. Game time is 7:30 at Jack Couch Stadium in Kitchener.
