Laurier: 1 YORK: 4
TORONTO (December 1, 2017) - After winning their first matchup with the York Lions this season, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team could not come out on the winning end this time around as they suffered an unfortunate 4-1 loss on the road Friday night.
Coming into the arena first in the OUA West following Thursday's win over Waterloo, the Hawks fought to maintain their ranking as they looked to enter the holiday break on a winning note. However, the host Lions had other plans for Laurier as Trevor Peterson (Thornhill, Ont.) opened the scoring for the Lions with a goal midway through the first frame.
Despite Colin Furlong
(Cambridge, Ont.) making two highlight reel saves in the second, Nik Coric (Newmarket, Ont.) extended the lead for York as he found the back of the net bringing the score to 2-0 in favour of the Lions.
Moving into the third period, the intensity rose in the contest and the Hawks responded as Neil Aird
(Ancaster, Ont.) found the back of the net midway through the third period to cut the Lions' lead in half.
The momentum from the goal was short lived though as Colton Vannucci (High River, Alta.) and Scott Feser (Red Deer, Atla.) scored late goals to secure the win for York.
Furlong was active in goal for the Hawks, denying 27 shots. Lions netminder Alex Fotinos (Toronto, Ont.) took the win as he stopped 23 shots.
Now 10-4-2 on the season, the Hawks drop to third in the West Division, one point behind the Lions (11-4-1) and Guelph Gryphons (11-3-1).
The Golden Hawks will look to get back to their winning ways when they return in the new year on Friday, January 5 to face off against the Ryerson Rams on home ice. The puck is set to drop at 7:07 p.m.
