It was quite the weekend at the Laurier Athletic Complex two weeks ago as the Golden Hawks basketball teams took on York Lions Friday night at the residence game. The women’s team played a hard fought game keeping up and staying close in score to the Lions until the bitter end. The women’s team was defeated by the Lions, but gave it they're all with a final score of 58-69. With one loss already under the Golden Hawks belt, Laurier's men's basketball team knew they had to bring the heat to the Lions. The first two quarters were close as both teams were back and forth. During the second half of the game, the Hawks pulled forward and lead the rest of the game, winning with a score of 87-75 taming the Lions in the end.
The bleachers were filled with fans and first years supporting the residence game. The fans never stopped cheering on the Golden Hawks during both the men's and women's game. Among the crowd, it was hard to miss first year student Bianca Galluzzo. She attended both the women’s and men’s basketball game, cheering her heart out at every single point. For being a great fan and doing an outstanding job supporting both the Golden Hawks and her residence, Bianca went home as the Wilf's Fans of the Game.
Saturday night's games did not disappoint as both teams took on the Queen's Gaels. The women’s team was first to play with a real nail-biter. With the game that could go any way, the women’s team knew they were going to have to push until the very end. In a ridiculously tight game, the Golden Hawks ended up on top, beating the Gaels with a close score of 72-70 in the Gaels first loss of the season. The Golden Hawks very own Nicole Morrison had quite the game as she set a school record for most points in a single game at a total of 37 points against the Gaels. After an intense and exciting game, it was the men’s turn to show the Gaels whose nest they were in. They kept the heat on until the end, but with a game so close it was hard to know who would end up victorious. The men’s team fell short by just 1 point, losing to the Gaels 77-76.
With both games being so close and electrifying, the stands were filled all night long. With a crowd so hyped up as they cheered on both the women's and mens teams, the Golden Hawks gained some extra support near the end. Among the huge crowd that came out on Saturday was Hailey McLaren. Attending both games, Hailey cheered her heart out and never missed a play. Hailey went home as our Wilf's Fan of the Game with a t-shirt and gift card to Wilf's Restaurant & Bar.
