WATERLOO, Ont. (November 18, 2017) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team lost for the sixth time in their first seven games of the season as they fell 3-1 to the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

April Clark of St. Marys, Ont., led the way for the Mustangs as she tallied a pair of goals while Evra Levesque of Wawa, Ont., scored the game winner midway through the first period.

Rookie defenceman Rebecca Hall of Claremont, Ont., replied for the Hawks thanks to her first career goal early in the second period.

Right from the opening faceoff, the Hawks found themselves on the defensive against a Mustangs team that sits second in the OUA this season. Western (5-1-2-2) peppered the Laurier goal in the opening 20 minutes, outshooting Laurier 25-9 while chasing Hawks starting netminder Cohen Myers of Shakespeare, Ont. from the net.

Hannah Miller of Georgetown, Ont., came on in relief for Laurier and was brilliant the rest of the contest, stopping 39 of the 40 shots she faced.

Laurier (1-0-5-1) managed to find some life in their game early in the second period thanks to a fortunate bounce in front of Western goalie Tareya Webster of Montreal, to pull the score to 2-1. That would be as close as they would get as Clark scored her second of the game late in the frame and the Mustangs would shut down Laurier in the third, skating off with the win.

Webster finished the contest with 21 saves to pick up her third victory of the season.

The Hawks will close out their four-game homestand this Thursday, November 23rd, when they host the Brock Badgers (5-1-2-1). Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
