BURLINGTON, Ont. (November 7, 2017) - Following impressive debuts during the 2017 season, three members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team were announced as OUA All-Rookies on Tuesday afternoon.
Running back Kavantye Bailey
of Calgary, receiver Nick Petermann
of Hamilton and linebacker Mario Pineda
of Cambridge, Ont., were among the 26 players honoured this season by the conference.
Bailey, an arts major who attended Trinity College School, dressed in all eight games for the Hawks this season and finished fourth on the team in rushing, accumulating 105 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. His top performance came in Week 5 when he ran for 44 yards on six carries against the Waterloo Warriors.
Petermann, a business major who attended Cardinal Newman SS, also played in all eight games for the purple and gold as he managed to earn backup duties among a talented receiving core. He finish the season with two catches for nine yards while also rushing the ball once for five yards.
Finally, Pineda, a local product from Jacob Hespeler SS and first year arts major, also dressed in all eight games, finishing the year with 10.5 tackles, one sack and one pass breakup. His best performance came in Week 8 against Guelph when, as a starter for the first time in his career, he recorded 8.5 tackles and one sack.
Since All-Rookie honours were introduced by the conference in 2013, 13 Hawks have now been recognized with the award, including eight members of the current roster.
