WATERLOO, Ont. (November 2, 2017) - In a showdown between the top two teams in the OUA West division, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team were victorious as they defeated the No. 5 York Lions 6-2 at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

Tensions were rising in the first frame as the puck slid between zones and Colton Vannucci (High River, Alta.) had the first goal of the night giving York a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks soared into the second as Anthony Sorrentino (Woodbridge, Ont.), Erik Pushka (Dugald, Man.) and Andrew Fritsch (Brantford,Ont.) all scored to capture a 3-1 lead. For Fritsch, the goal was his first of the season and came on the powerplay, helping Laurier snap an 0-for-23 slide with the man advantage.

At a mere 27 seconds into the third, Waterloo, Ont., native Danny Hanlon beat York netminder Mack Shields (Saskatoon, Sask.) to extend the Hawks advantage to 4-1.

Midway through the third, York’s Scott Feser (Red Deer, Alta.) cut Laurier's lead in half but the Hawks were quick to respond as Jeremy Pullara of Vaughan, Ont., restored the three-goal lead just a minute later.

Kyle Jenkins (Brampton, Ont.) would ice the contest for Laurier with an empty net tally to bring the final score to 6-2.

Pushka finished the night with a goal and an assist to give him three points in his last two games while Anthony Conti of North Vancouver, B.C., had a pair of assists.

Colin Furlong (Cambridge, Ont.) stood strong in net finishing the night with 31 saves to pick up his first win of the season. Meanwhile, Shields took the loss as he finished with 18 saves.

With the win, Laurier (5-1-1) moves to within a point of the Lions (6-1-0) for first place in the OUA West Division.

Next up, the Hawks head to London, Ont., on Saturday night to play the Western Mustangs (1-4-0). Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. at the Thompson Arena.

The game can be seen live on OUA.tv.
