U Sports Top 10: MFOOT back to No.5 in Canada
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 24, 2017) – As of Tuesday afternoon, the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks men’s football team have been announced as No.5 in the country following their recent 40-15 win against the No.7 McMaster Marauders.

After earning a 39-0 victory over the York Lions in Week 1 of the 2017 regular season, the Hawks jumped to No.6 in the country, a title which they held onto despite their bye-week in Week 2. As per Week 3, the Golden Hawks continued to soar as a top team in the nation. Following the Hawks 38-35 victory against the Carleton Ravens, 40-17 win over the Queen’s Gaels in Week 4, and the 71-24 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in Week 5, the purple and goal sustained the No.5 position. Instead of launching forward, Laurier continues to stay at the No.5 position following the most anticipated game of the season where the Hawks were handed a 13-29 loss at the hands of the Western Mustangs. In Week 7, the Hawks bounced back and took a 53-31 win over the York Lions which was shortly lived as Week 8 rolled around and the purple and gold took a 24-14 loss against the Guelph Gryphons. This ultimately dropped them to No.7 in Canada. Then, buoyed by record-setting performances from receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. and defensive lineman Robbie Smith, the Golden Hawks defeated the McMaster Marauders 40-15 on Saturday afternoon to clinch second place in the OUA standings, launching them to the OUA semi-finals as well as a No.5 national ranking.

The Golden Hawks return to the field after their bye-week to host the semi-finals on November 4th at University Stadium at 1:00 p.m., where they will take on the highest seeded opponent coming out of quarter-finals.
