NORTH BAY, Ont. (October 20, 2017) - On Friday night, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team were handed their first loss of the regular season against the Nipissing Lakers who snagged the game-winning goal midway through the third period to take home a 2-1 win.

Right off the puck drop, the Golden Hawks worked hard on the defensive end and were diligent in blocking the Lakers' shooting lanes.

At the eight minute mark of the opening frame, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead as rookie Anthony Sorrentino (Woodbridge, Ont.) scored his first career goal as a Golden Hawk off a feed from Alex Annecchiarico (Richmond Hill, Ont.).

Nipissing would respond late in the period as Matt Donnelly (Barrie, Ont.) would net an unassisted goal to end the first period in a 1-1 tie.

Opening the second frame the Lakers took control of the game but were unable to break through Laurier's defence.

Things were looking up for the Hawks as Nipissing had a rotation in and out of the penalty box with three back-to-back penalties for slashing, high sticking and goaltender interference. Sadly, the Hawks were unable to take advantage of having an extra man on the ice during this time and left the period still deadlocked.

Midway through the final period, it looked as though Nipissing might break through as they were handed a two-man advantage by the purple and gold. However, Laurier's strong penalty killing shone again as they killed off the advantage, maintaining their perfect rating through the first three games of the season.

However, just minutes later, Brody Morris (Corbyville, Ont.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Lakers as they skated away with a 2-1 victory.

Colin Furlong (Cambridge, Ont.) finished the night with 27 saves while Brent Moran (Orleans, Ont.) took the victory by saving 24 shots.

The loss puts Laurier at 2-1-0 on the season after the team opened the year with a pair of wins over Lakehead.

Next up, the Hawks head to Sudbury on Saturday night to play the Laurentian Voyageurs. Puck drop is set for 7:35 p.m. at Sudbury Countryside Arena.
