Symington, McCordic are Athletes of the Week
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 16, 2017) - Men's baseball pitcher Kyle Symington of Burlington, Ont., and women’s soccer midfielder Pauline McCordic of North Vancouver, B.C., have been announced as this week’s Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 15th, 2017.

For the second time this season, Symington of Burlington, Ont. has captured this nomination due to what Head Coach Scott Ballantyne called a “gutsy performance” on the field during the OUA championship on Sunday afternoon in Ajax, Ont. When the Hawks faced McMaster on Friday for the OUA quarter-final, Symington threw an incredible nine-inning complete game shutout leading the Hawks to a 2-0 win. Next up, the purple and gold faced Queen’s and took a 5-4 win in the OUA semifinals. Although the Hawks took an 8-3 loss against Toronto in the OUA Final to bring home silver, Symington came in and threw out of the bullpen for three innings, allowing four hits, two runs, while recording four strikeouts.

This is Symington’s second time earning Male Athlete of the Week Honours.

A fourth year biology major, McCordic was an unmistakable presence at midfield for the Golden Hawks women's soccer team this past weekend. In the highly-anticipated matchup against Western, who is currently ranked No. 4 in the country, McCordic had a shot and played a disciplined defensive role that helped the Hawks to a final score of 1-1 with the Mustangs, ending their 12-game losing streak. During the Hawks' second contest against the Windsor Lancers, McCordic shined with a late goal to tie Windsor 1-1. The performance on the weekend marks Laurier’s seventh consecutive game earning a point resulting in the team moving up to third in the OUA West division with 25 points and 6-2-7 on the season.

This is McCordic’s third time earning Female Athlete of the Week Honours.
