WATERLOO, Ont. (October 10, 2017) - After a shaky preseason where the purple and gold took four losses and a sole 5-2 win against the Waterloo Warriors, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team is keen to start the season off with a pair of victories against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
The Hawks had an unfortunate end to their 2016-17 season as they lost Game 3 of their OUA West Quarter-final series 3-2 in overtime to the Windsor Lancers. The purple and gold are sure to look on their strong recruits and returning players to go all the way and capture the title in the 2017-18 season.
Determined to increase the talent level on the ice, head coach Greg Puhalski
brought in four recruits, two defencemen and two forwards, to strengthen the roster.
Headlining the class is defender Kyle Jenkins
of Brampton, Ont., who played four season in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where his presence on the blue line last fall saw him sign an amateur tryout agreement with the Edmonton Oilers after participating in the NHL’s rookie camp.
Joining Jenkins all the way from North Vancouver, B.C. is Anthony Conti
who hits the ice for the purple and gold having played two seasons in the NCAA and laced up for 16 games in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL).
Up front, Puhalski roped in two teammates Anthony Sorrentino
and Jeremy Pullara
, both wingers from Woodbridge, Ont. Sorrentino has played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and more recently spent the 2016-17 season with the Trenton Golden Hawks of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). As for Pullara, he served as Assistant Captain of the Trenton Golden Hawks.

While the new faces bring excitement to the team, the Hawks also have strong core returning players. Leading Laurier as their 2016-17 Team Most Valuable Player while also leading the OUA with an impressive 693 saves on the season and a fourth-place ranking with a save percentage of .928%, Cambridge, Ont. native Colin Furlong
is a promising player returning to the ice. Looking to also capitalize off last season is Brandon Robinson
of Pickering, Ont., who finished the 2016-17 season as Laurier’s Team Rookie of the Year and tied for third in the OUA for power-play goals with six to his name. After finishing the 2016-17 season as the West Division’s Most Sportsmanlike Award recipient, forward Andrew Fritsch
of Brantford, Ont., will look to lead his team once again in scoring after recording 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points a year ago.
The Hawks are set to open up their regular season on Friday, October 13th at 7:07 p.m., when they face the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Sun Life Financial Arena. The two teams will wrap up their weekend doubleheader on Saturday, October 14th with puck drop also set for 7:07 p.m.
