WATERLOO, ON - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's football team has announced the Players of the Game following a 29-13 Homecoming defeat at the hands of the Western Mustangs. This past Saturday’s loss was the Hawks’ first of the season and dropped their record to 4-1.
This week's Laurier Football Players of the Week (offence, defence, special teams) are: receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr.
(Ottawa, Ont.), linebacker Brandon Calver
(London, Ont.) and kicker Nathan Mesher
This marks the third week in a row that Gittens Jr. has been recognized as a Laurier Football Player of the Week – and it’s certainly for good reason.
Having recorded 174 receiving yards on 18 receptions, the third-year receiver came just one catch short of tying the team and USports record of 19 set by Andre Talbot. His near-history making performance aside, Gittens Jr. did establish a new career high in that category as well as for single-game yardage – which he did just two weeks ago against Queen’s.
Meanwhile, veteran linebacker Brandon Calver
(London, Ont.) had the best defensive performance of his career, recording 11 total tackles to lead the team and surpass his previous high of 10.
The fifth-year student-athlete was at the centre of Laurier’s defensive effort in holding Western quarterback Chris Merchant to a season-low 109 passing yards and holding the Mustangs to 29 total points – which tied their season-low output.
On special teams, kicker Nathan Mesher
(Waterloo, Ont.) has been recognized as a Laurier Football Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Going 2 for 3 on field goals from distances of 21 and 23 yards, Mesher was also particularly effective in the field position battle, averaging 41.3 yards per punt – which included one greater than 50 yards for the second week in a row and the third time this season.
The Laurier Football Players of the Week are presented by OneCard and the Laurier Bookstore.
In a quick turnaround, the Golden Hawks visit the York Lions (1-4) on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. kick-off at York Lions Stadium.Written by: Dan Polischuk
