WATERLOO, Ont. (September 25, 2017) - Men's soccer goalkeeper Ryan Mandryk
of Ancaster, Ont., and women’s soccer forward Maxine Murchie
of Kitchener, Ont., have been announced as this week’s Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 24th, 2017.
Men’s soccer’s goalkeeper Ryan Mandryk
, a fourth-year psychology major from Ancaster, Ont., played a strong game between the posts during the back-to-back matchups against Algoma this past weekend. In the first game on Saturday afternoon, Mandryk played for all 90 minutes and earned a shutout with two saves as the Hawks won 2-0. This marked the goalkeepers first win of the season in net. During the second game against Algoma on Sunday, Mandryk played for all 90 minutes yet again and earned another shutout with two saves as the Hawks took home a 3-0. Mandryk's performance in net marked a career high in shut-outs, with two on the season thus far. Thanks to the pair of victories, the purple and gold have now improved to 3-6-1 on the season and are tied for fifth in the OUA West.
This is Mandryk's first time earning Male Athlete of the Week Honours.
Murchie, a fifth-year forward from Kitchener Ont., had yet another strong weekend on the field. In the first match up against Algoma on Saturday, Murchie led the team with four shots on goal, which resulted in successfully scoring two goals, in addition to adding one assist to help the Hawks to a 7-1 victory. The purple and gold then took a 1-0 win for the second game against Algoma on Sunday, due to the visiting school's forfeit. With a pair of wins in the books, the Hawks now have 3-2-4 on the season and are tied for fifth in the OUA West.
This is Murchie’s third time earning Female Athlete of the Week Honours.
