WATERLOO, Ont. (Sept. 25, 2017) -- The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's football team has announced its players of the game following a 71-24 win over the Waterloo Warriors Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Hawks moved to 4-0 on the season and extended their winning streak against the previously unbeaten Warriors (4-1) to 14 games.
This week's Laurier Football Players of the Week (offence, defence, special teams) are: receiver Brentyn Hall
(Toronto, Ont.), defensive lineman Sam Acheampong
(Brampton, Ont.) and receiver/returner Kurleigh Gittens Jr.
Hall was a big-play machine Saturday, taking two of his three receptions for touchdowns and racking up 144 yards, the second highest single-game total of his career. Hall made a spectacular 44-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter after the Warriors had climbed within four points of the Hawks and in the third quarter took another Michael Knevel
(Brantford, Ont.) pass 89 yards for his second score of the day. The game against Waterloo marked the second-straight 100-yard performance for Hall, who was coming off an eight-catch, 111-yard day versus Queen's on Sept. 16. Hall now leads the OUA averaging 23.3 yards per catch, while his 350 receiving yards through four games put him fifth in the conference.
A Laurier Football Player of the Week for the first time in his Golden Hawk career, Acheampong was a constant presence in the Warriors' backfield on Saturday. The second year made a career-high five tackles, all solo, three of which went for a loss, and recorded his second sack of the season. Acheampong played a key role in a Laurier defensive effort that held the Warriors to 353 yards of total offence, well below their season average of 495 per game coming into Saturday's contest. The Golden Hawks picked up four sacks and forced three turnovers (two interceptions and a sack) Saturday.
After taking offensive player of the game honours last week, Gittens is recognized for his work in the return game this week. The third year scored a 65-yard punt return touchdown on the final play of the first half Saturday to put the Hawks up 33-15 heading into halftime. Gittens added 75 yards on three kick returns and finished the day with 161 all-purpose yards. Tied for the OUA lead in receiving yards per game (99.8), Gittens now sits tied for third in the conference in punt return average at 18.8 yards per punt return. Gittens was a second-team OUA all-star as a returner last season.
The Laurier Football Players of the Week are presented by OneCard and the Laurier Bookstore.
The Golden Hawks host the Western Mustangs in a Yates Cup rematch this Saturday at 1 p.m. at University Stadium as Laurier celebrates its annual Homecoming.
