Competitive dance team wraps up tryouts
The competitive dance team has outlined the audition process and the current 2017-18 team
WATERLOO, Ont. (October 20, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks competitive dance team wrapped up their tryouts for the 2017-18 season. The judges were thrilled to see the turnout this year and would like to thank all of the talented dancers who took the time to audition. In order to keep the momentum going, the following information has been provided about the audtion process and the current state of our 2017-18 team.
About the Audition Process
The audition process spans over the course of two days. Tap and Hip Hop auditions are run separately as there are often speciality dancers who only audition for these styles of dance.
Auditions for the contemporary, jazz, lyrical and open team consists of four parts: a warm-up, an across the floor section (where dancers demonstrate their technique in jumps, turns and kicks), a combination portion (where a contemporary piece is learned) and an interview portion. Prior to the combination portion, the panel of judges make a cut and only those who are asked to return, learn the contemporary piece and are given an interview.
All parts of the audition are performed in front of a panel of judges which include the current year’s co-captains and assistant captain, as well as the co-captains from the previous year. It is this panel that is responsible for making the challenging decisions in choosing the team for the season.
The 2017-18 Team
This year, we have 31 talented members, including two co-captains, an assistant captain, an executive team and a choreography team. We have begun our weekly practices and are in the process of preparing 13 dances to compete with at our annual competitions.
On Sunday evenings, we learn the choreography to our dances, and on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, bright and early, we focus on conditioning and technique.
