WATERLOO, Ont. (September 24th, 2017) - In the 2017/2018 season, it can be definitively stated that the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s soccer team have the Algoma Thunderbirds number. The Thunderbirds came to Waterloo for two games this weekend and left without earning a point. On Sunday, the Hawks earned a 3-0 victory, displaying exceptional offensive play in the first half and stellar defence.

It looked like the Hawks would establish a pattern, scoring once every ten minutes, as they found the net in the 10th, 20th and 30th minute. However, that would be all the scoring they got and evidently, all the scoring they would need.

In the 10th minute, an opportunity arose when a poor tackle occurred just outside the Thunderbirds 18-yard box. Antonio Hecimovic (New Hamburg, Ont.) took the resulting free kick and made no mistake, placing a shot above and around the Algoma four-man wall and into the top corner of the net. With the finish, Hecimovic continued a recent hot streak, scoring in back-to-back games and bagging his third goal of the season.

The 20th minute featured an exceptional run on the right wing by Luca Moca Montanaro (Woodbridge, Ont.), who at the end of his sprint placed a perfect ball into the box. The ball landed on the head of Nikola Miokovic (Kitchener, Ont.) who buried it into the bottom corner, extending the Hawks lead to 2-0.

Miokovic wasn’t done there. In the 30th minute, coming off a cross from Donte Henry (Toronto, Ont.), Miokovic headed home another ball. It was his fifth goal of the season, good enough for eighth best in the OUA.

The Hawks were very aggressive offensively, peppering the opposition goal with opportunities. For the game, the Hawks totaled 21 shots and earned five corners. Despite being busy all game, Algoma keeper Tanvir Grewal (Surrey, BC) played very well, making eleven saves.

For Laurier, keeper Ryan Mandryk (Ancaster, Ont.) held the fort and earned his second shutout in as many days.

Next up for the Hawks is a test against McMaster on Friday, September 29th. Kickoff is set for 3:15 pm at University Stadium.
