Laurier: 7 ALGOMA: 1
WATERLOO, Ont. (Saturday, September 23, 2017) – The Laurier Golden Hawks Women’s Soccer team were clear favourites on paper heading into Saturday’s contest against the winless Algoma Thunderbirds at University Stadium. The question was, would the Hawks sit back and relax against a weaker opponent or would they drop the hammer? The purple and gold left no questions unanswered on this steamy, late-September afternoon, scoring early and often to the tune of a 7-1 victory.
It was an exciting day offensively for the Hawks (3-2-4), with goals from a number of unexpected sources. Second year defender Ellie Reid
(Richmond, B.C.) opened the scoring inside the opening minute of action, with what was her first goal as a Golden Hawk.
There were a number of milestone goals for the purple and gold Saturday. Danielle Ortlieb
’s (Kitchener, Ont.) late goal wrapped up the scoring barrage for Laurier. It was also her first as a Hawk.
There were also several familiar names in on the attack for the Hawks. Maxine Murchie
(Kitchener, Ont.) had two, while Nicole Lyon
(Kitchener, Ont.), Natalie Barry
(Toronto, Ont.), and Gagan Parhar
(Surrey, B.C.) all added markers for Laurier in a six-goal first half.
Sarah Van Boerdonk (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) replied for the Thunderbirds (0-7) late on a penalty kick.
The Hawks will need to stay sharp as these two teams run it back for a rematch tomorrow. Kickoff is once again set for 1:00 p.m. at University Stadium.
