Waterloo,Ont. (September 23rd, 2017) - On a humid Saturday afternoon at University Stadium, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s soccer team took care of business against the Algoma Thunderbirds.The Hawks dominated the game, controlling possession and firing off several shots, ultimately resulting in a 2-0 victory. In total, the Hawks peppered Thunderbird goalkeeper Tanvir Grewal (Surrey, BC) with 15 shots for the game and earned four corners.
The two goals came at opposite ends of the game. In the ninth minute, it was Antonio Hecimovic
(New Hamburg, Ont.), off an assist from Liam Chong Tai
(Mississauga, Ont.) who opened the scoring, and in the 87th minute, Joren Ramsay-Marshall
(Brampton, Ont.) set up Trystan Martin
(Toronto, Ont.) who provided the finishing touch.
The Hawks played a very aggressive game offensively. Led by Hecimovic, who not only scored the first goal but also totaled six shots, three of them on goal. Nikola Miokovic
(Kitchener, Ont.) had six shots (three on goal) and Luca Moca – Montanaro (Woodbridge, Ont.) provided two shots, both on net.
Keeper Ryan Mandryk
(Ancaster, Ont.) was stellar in goal, making two saves and preserving a Laurier shutout.
Laurier midfielder Laith Adi
(Mississauga, Ont.) picked up his first yellow card of the season in the 90th minute. For Algoma, Olawumni Nurudeen (Nigeria) and Riley Thompson (Listowel, Ont.) received yellow cards for reckless tackles, both coming in the second half.
The two teams will battle in a rematch tomorrow afternoon at University Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:15 pm.
