Laurier: 0 WESTERN: 1
WATERLOO, Ont. (Sunday, September 17, 2017) – It was a tough day at the office for the Laurier Golden Hawks women’s soccer team Sunday afternoon a University Stadium. The Hawks slugged it out with their rivals the Western Mustangs for 90 minutes of physical, defensive-minded soccer. With chances few and far between for both sides, the Mustangs were able to capitalize in a rare Laurier lapse of concentration early on, taking that single marker to the bank for a 1-0 victory on the road.
Much was made of the Mustangs defence coming into the match, having surrendered just one goal in their first six matchups. This attention proved to be well-warranted, as Western (6-1-0) was well organized throughout, frustrating the purple and gold by only allowing four shots on the afternoon.
The Hawks (2-2-4) went step-for-step defensively with Western for the majority of the match, save for a couple chances allowed early. Unfortunately for Laurier, the Mustangs took advantage, Sabrina Denard (London, Ont.) firing home her second goal of the season in the 16th minute to put the visitors ahead.
Stout defence took over for the majority of the match, with the Hawks only managing to find their few close chances in the final minutes. However, it was a case of too little too late for the purple and gold, succumbing to the clock.Ashley Almeida
(Burlington, Ont.) was solid in net for the Laurier, stopping five out of six shots on target. Megan Girardi (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) collected the clean sheet for the Mustangs.
Moving forward, the Hawks welcome in the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-6-0) for a pair at University Stadium next weekend. This should be a great opportunity for the Hawks to pick up some points against an Algoma team that has struggled thus far this season. Kickoff goes at 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
