Waterloo, Ont. (September 17th, 2017) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s soccer team lost a 3-0 decision against the Western Mustangs on Sunday at University Stadium. For the Mustangs, Connor Wilson (London, Ont.) plotted two goals and Chuka Ononye (Richmond Hill, Ont.) finished the other. Wilson scored in the 14th minute and plotted another in the 61st, while Ononye put one past Hawk goalkeeper Rocco Strazzella (Woodbrige, Ont.) in the 64th.

The Mustangs totalled 11 shots for the game and 6 on net, compared to the Hawks who had six shots for the game with three of them being shots on goal. Wilson and Reza Nasar (Tehran, Iran) both provided two shots on goal, while Ononye and Luca Trivisonno (Toronto, Ont.) each added one. For the Hawks, they were led offensively by Antonio Hecimovic (New Hamburg, Ont.), Aaron Johnston (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Luca Moco-Montanaro (Woodbridge, Ont.) who all had one shot on goal.

With the shutout, Western keeper Kody Thomson (Calgary, Ont.) becomes the league leader in the category, totalling four clean-sheets on the season.

Moco-Montanaro was the player of the game for Laurier, as he made several runs down the wing and challenged the Western defence. The second year player is incredibly fast and forced the Mustang defence to adjust in order to contain his speed.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 5-0-2 on the season, good enough for second place in the OUA West standings, just behind the Guelph Gryphons. As for the Hawks, they fall to 1-6-1 and seventh place in the division.

From here, the Hawks will host the Algoma Thunderbirds for back to-back day games on Saturday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 24th.
