THREE IS KEY
The Laurier Golden Hawks women’s soccer team has been a model of consistency through six games this season, taking points from five of those, a feat only accomplished by two other OUA teams thus far in 2017.

While that sort of consistency is important, the margins have proven to be slim in the OUA West Division in 2017. Only three points separate first and fifth place in the division, a fact that looks unlikely to change in the near future.

The Hawks (2-1-3) have had trouble closing a couple games so far, surrendering late leads in settling for draws in their season opener against Brock and last Sunday at Waterloo. These missed opportunities are all that separate the Hawks from being in first place right now.

Instead, the purple and gold play the role of chaser this weekend as division leaders the Windsor Lancers (3-1-3) and Western Mustangs (4-1-0). While they may be chasing, the Hawks cannot be considered the clear underdog, especially on home soil. The team has shown great quality in their recent performances, scoring two wins and a draw in their previous three contests.

However, one thing is certain if the Hawks want to maneuver themselves into pole position this weekend. They can no longer settle for draws, they need to take all three points for themselves

THROW IN’S
-    In a surprising result Wednesday evening, Western went into Windsor and gave the Lancers a stomping, outshooting them 14-2 on route to a 4-0 victory, will Windsor be vulnerable Saturday when they visit Laurier?
-    The OUA’s East Division is looking powerful in the early stages, with UOIT, Ottawa, and Queen’s all residing in the Top 5 in Tuesday’s U SPORTS rankings. Meanwhile, no West team is ranked in the Top 10 and luckily for the Hawks, they do not have to face an eastern opponent in the regular season
-    The Hawks play their next five games at home before the end of September, make sure you get out to University Stadium in that time to support the team! In addition, Saturday's match is Dollar Day.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (2-1-3)
GK Ashley Almeida (Burlington, Ont.)
-    The keeper has been a vocal leader for a defence that has proven to be very capable of shutting down opponents, consistently holding offences under 10 shots a contest
-    Allowing just one goal in three contests, Almeida was named Laurier Female Athlete of the Week

Windsor Lancers (3-1-3)
GK Krystin Lawrence (Tecumseh, Ont.)
-    Splitting time in goal for the Lancers, Lawrence has posted some sparkling numbers so far this year, including a 0.67 Goal Against Average and a .926 Save Percentage

Western Mustangs (4-1-0)
MF Giulia Geraci (Bradford, Ont.)
-    The first year has been an important contributor for the Mustangs, leading the team in goals with three, including a brace in Wednesday’s win in Windsor
