WATERLOO, Ont. (September 11, 2017) - Men's baseball pitcher Kyle Symington
of Burlington, Ont., and women’s soccer goalie Ashley Almeida
of Burlington, Ont., have been announced as this week’s Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 10th, 2017.
Symington of Burlington, Ont., enters his second season as a Laurier pitcher, as he comes off of the Hawks' 2016 season that marked them as the regular season Pennant winners for the first time in school history. Following last year’s successful season, the business major was honoured with the Wilfrid Laurier Men’s Baseball Team Rookie of the Year Award, and was also named an OUA Men’s Baseball First Team All-Star. During what was the opening weekend of 2017 regular season play for the purple and gold, the Hawks went 3-1 for win/loss, having earned a loss and a single victory over Queen's on Saturday before adding two more wins to their name against McMaster on Sunday. During the Hawks' second game of the weekend against Queen’s, Symington threw an incredible seven-inning complete game shutout and served four strikeouts to lead the Hawks to a 4-0 win. The Golden Hawks' solid performance over the weekend paced them to a tied position for first in the OUA standings, alongside Western, with both teams having six points to their names.
This is Symington’s first time earning Male Athlete of the Week Honours.
Almeida from Burlington, Ont., was an unmistakable presence between the posts for the Golden Hawks women's soccer team this past weekend. In what was the Hawks' first contest of the weekend against the York Lions on Friday night, as well as a chance for the Hawks to defend the 1-0 victory they earned over the Lions last weekend, the business major didn't fail to replicate her past success, as she earned her second consecutive shutout of the season. In this, four saves on the night lead the purple and gold to a final score of 2-0 over the Lions. During the Hawks' second contest against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, Almeida had another strong preformance in net, and assured a thrilling matchup for the first installment of the Battle of Waterloo. Here, Almeida made four saves and only allowed one goal past her, which resulted in a 1-1 draw with the Warriors, and saw the Hawks go undefeated on the weekend. This performance has led to her being second in the league for shutouts, with two to her name, and has Laurier in a three-way tie for third place in the OUA West standings, with nine points on the season off a 2-1-3 record.
This is Almeida’s first time earning Female Athlete of the Week Honours.
