HAMILTON, Ont. (August 27, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team suffered their second loss of their opening weekend as McMaster defeated them 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton.
From the opening whistle, neither the Hawks nor the Marauders had an offensive push to earn the lead. With McMaster leading Laurier with only one shot on the day, it was clear that the second 45 would put both teams on the attack.
Hungry to be the first on the scoreboard, the Marauders' energy turned fiesty as they accumulated two yellow cards within two minutes, to put three penalites on their game by early into the second half.
Unfortunately for the visiting Hawks, McMaster's drive broke the scoreless game in their favour, when Matthew Monteiro of Burlington, Ont. put the ball past Laurier goalkeeper Rocco Strazella (Woodbridge, Ont.), to see the Marauders take a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute.
Faced with a deficit, the Hawks were able to muster a couple of chances late in the game, with Kitchener native Nikola Miokovic and Gurjinder Garcha (Burlington, Ont.) providing the Hawks' only two shots of the game. Despite their effort, the purple and gold were unable to break McMaster goalkeeper Giacinto DiDomenico (Hamilton, Ont.).
The loss puts the Golden Hawks at 0-2 on the season while McMaster trends in the opposite direction, improving to 2-0. For the Hawks next game, they welcome the defending OUA champions Guelph Gryphons to University Stadium on Saturday September 2nd, in what will be Laurier’s home opener. Game time is set for 3:15pm.
