Laurier: 2 MCMASTER: 2
HAMILTON, Ont. (Sunday, August 27, 2017) – Another day, the same result for the Laurier Golden Hawks women’s soccer team on Sunday afternoon as they drew 2-2 with the McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton.
Although Sunday’s outcome was the same as in their season opener Friday against Brock, the path to that result was very different for the Hawks (0-0-2). Unlike Friday, it was the Hawks’ turn to scrap their way back from multiple deficits.
The Marauders (0-0-2) first put themselves ahead in the 29th minute on a goal from Hamilton, Ont. striker Maila Carboni and were able to take that lead into the locker room. However, that advantage did not last long into the second half as Nicole Lyon
(Kitchener, Ont.) delivered her second penalty kick goal in as many games to get the purple and gold back on even terms.
Minutes later, Cassidy Davis of Minesing, Ont. replied with a strike from the penalty spot of her own to put McMaster.
With the clock not on their side, the Hawks amped up their offensive pressure on the Marauders in the late stages, chipping away at the defensive resolve of the home side. Mackenzie D’Andrade (Newmarket, Ont.) was the one to finally make the key move for the Hawks, turning and firing a strike that glanced just off the fingertips of Marauder goalkeeper Deeana Persico (Aurora, Ont.) and into the back of the net to once again tie up the game in the dying minutes.
D'Andrade has been on fire during the opening weekend, scoring two goals and establishing herself constant threat on offence, leading the team with four shots Sunday.
Following a productive opening weekend on the road, the Hawks return to Waterloo for their home opener next Saturday. Revenge will certainly be on their mind as they take on the team that knocked them out of the 2016 playoffs, the Guelph Gryphons (1-0-1). Kickoff will be at 1:00 p.m. from University Stadium.
