WATERLOO, Ont. (August 17, 2017)- The Wilfrid Laurier University Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to officially announce the hirings of full-time staff member Stef Kubacki, as well as Katrina Beverly
, who will be taking on a one year contract.
Kubacki was hired for the newly-created role of Recreation Assistant at the end of July. Beverly joins the department for a one year maternity leave contract, filling in for Amanda Taylor
as Aquatics, Clubs and Camp Coordinator.
Kubacki starts in Athletics and Recreation on a full-time basis after working in the department for four years throughout her time as a student at Laurier, while completing her Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology and Physical Education, as well as her Bachelor of Education.
“I am extremely excited to be able to continue working for Laurier’s Athletics and Recreation Department” commented Kubacki on her new position. “I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to a department that has provided me with so many valuable experiences over the course of my university career. I look forward to providing assistance and contributing to the exceptional recreation programs we currently offer students and community members”.
During Kubacki’s first role with Athletics and Recreation in the 2013-14 season, she was both a member of the Event Staff, where she assisted with the execution of varsity sporting events, as well as a Rock Wall Instructor. The summer that followed, she accepted the role of Summer Events Coordinator in which she expanded on her duties as Event Staff to include the facilitation of various fundraising events, like the Golf Classic. She then transitioned to a Student Leader role with the Events Staff with the new academic year, in addition to taking on the responsibilities of Fitness Centre Staff, while still maintaining her position as a Rock Wall Instructor. She then reprised her role as Summer Event Coordinator as well as Event Staff Student Leader and a Fitness Centre staff member during the next two school years. For the last two summers, Kubacki has worked as the Summer Recreation and Facilities Coordinator, where she assisted with the recruitment and training of student staff as well as managed day to day facility related inquiries.
Beverly will continue to work in Athletics and Recreation after working in multiple positions within the department as she completed her undergrad, swam on the varsity swim team and was actively participating in intramurals.
“My favourite part about going to Laurier was being involved in the Laurier Athletics community, it was during this time that I really developed and grew myself as a leader” stated Beverly. “What I’m most excited about for this position is being able to go back to a community that I love and to be able to see a new group of student staff develop and grow their own leadership potential.”
Beginning with working as an Intramural Referee in 2012-13, she also worked as the Hawk Desk Attendant, as a Lifeguard, as a part of the Summer Events Staff and as the Facility Attendant for the Hawk Desk, Fitness Centre and Stadium in the summer of 2014. This was followed by her immersion into her first Student Leader role as the Hawk Desk Coordinator and her second role as the Aquatics Coordinator for the summer of 2015 through to summer 2016. In these positions Beverly was responsible for hiring, training and evaluating numerous staff members and for continual supervision over all the events in said departments. In the 2015-16 year, Beverly received an award for Outstanding Customer Service.
