SWIM announces 2017-18 recruits
WATERLOO, Ont. (June 13, 2017)- Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks swim head coach Hans Witolla names six men and  ten women to the 2017-18 recruiting class.

“The incoming class of rookies for the Golden Hawk swim team may prove to be one of the strongest ever,” said head coach Hans Witolla on the talent of his incoming recruits. “The men’s class is particularly strong including one National qualifier and two swimmers who will score at OUA Championships in individual events. The women’s recruits also include three exceptionally strong swimmers who will challenge themselves to qualify for USPORTS Championships this coming season”.

Leading the men’s roster is Connor Norval from the Markham Aquatic Club and Bill Crothers secondary school. The rookie is a national qualifier in the 200m fly, and is expected to excel in the distance free events.

Joining Norval in the fly events, while also adding sprint freestyle and breaststroke to his roster, is John Stoyan. Hailing from the Toronto Swim Club, Stoyan will be a key contributor to both individual and relay competitions, and is said to meet USPORTS standards across his fields of expertise.

Thirdly, Ethan Locis from the Cambridge Aqua Jets is likely to make a splash for the Golden Hawks in the middle distance free, backstroke and individual medley ranks. Locis’ versatility will be a solid contribution to the Hawks, as he should be able to score at the OUA level and furthermore, challenge for USPORT qualifications soon after his opening season.

Rounding up the men’s roster is Jack Bone of the Guelph Marlins, who will contribute to the distance free events, Miguel Soloman from Mississauga, Ont., a sprint backstroke specialist, and Gabriel Popovic from the Toronto Swim Club.

As for the women, Anaka Will Dryden of Oakville, Ont., joins the purple and gold after completing a year at George Washington University. Prior to her university career, Dryden swam for the Oakville Aquatics Club where she was a senior national qualifier. As a sprint freestyle specialist, Dryden is expected to qualify for USPORTS Championships in both individual and relay events.

Also anticipated to challenge USPORTS in her first season is Menley Langham, coming from the London Aquatic Club. Having won the provincial championship this past year in the 200m breaststroke, she is a proven threat in said rank as well as the individual medley events.

Another rookie who also threatens to make USPORTS qualifications in the breaststroke category will be Maggie Copland. Alumnae of the Mississauga Aquatic Club, she was a bronze medal finalist at the National Age Group Championships this past year and is sure to be a strong addition to the Hawks.

Furthermore, Waterloo native Sarah El Badawy, who competes for the Region of Waterloo Swim Club, is thought to score at the OUA level in individual events, specifically for breaststroke and sprint free.

The final rookies for the 2017-18 class are Arielle Conn-Cornakovic and Lauren Cuylle, both of the Toronto Swim Club, Emma Radun from our neighbouring Club Warriors, Saskia Peloquin from Oakville Aquatic Club, Rachel Tucker of Orangeville, Ont., and Andrea Chelu from Ajax, Ont.

The Laurier swim team looks forward to competing when the season kicks off in mid-October.
