MGOLF sits 2nd heading into final day
BARRIE, Ont. (May 31, 2017) – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s golf team has put themselves in a position to win their first ever Canadian University/College Championship after three rounds at Tangle Creek Golf and Country Club as they sit in a tie for second place after 54 holes came to a close on Wednesday.

The Hawks, who led the team standings at 19-team event after the first two rounds, kept themselves in the hunt for a national championship after shooting a combined 18-over par 302 in the third round. That score leaves them tied with the UBC Thunderbirds at 46-over par 898, just one shot behind the leaders, the Laval Rouge et Or.

“It has been a good week for our players as they have battled windy weather, weather delays and tough course conditions,” said head coach Jeff Colley on the tournament thus far. “We will have to execute on every level tomorrow if we want to win a national championship. UBC and Laval are the two top programs in the country but if we play to our potential we can definitely come away with the national championship. Our players are very poised to win a tournament of this magnitude to help make our program one of the top golf programs in the country.”

Leading the charge on Day 3 of the tournament was the 2016 OUA Individual Champion, Austin Ryan. The Waterloo, Ont., native fired a round of three-over par 74 to move into a tie for seventh in the individual standings.

Joining him inside the Top 10 was the 18 and 27-hole leader Eric Flockhart of Mississuaga, Ont. Flockhart struggled on the day but kept himself in contention for the individual title as he shot a six-over par 77 to fall back to fifth place, five strokes behind the leader, Evan Holmes from the UBC Thunderbirds.

Both Andrew Cox of Kitchener, Ont., and Ryan Murphy of Ancaster, Ont., also contributed to Laurier’s team score on Wednesday as Cox finished at four-over par for the day while Murphy finished the round with a five-over par 76.

The top finisher in the men’s and women’s division will get an exemption into their respective Canadian Amateur Championships, and the top finishers in the men’s and women’s draws will qualify for the Summer Universiade Games, in Chinese Taipei, Taiwan, from Aug. 19-30.
