Fritsch named OUA West Most Sportsmanlike
BURLINGTON, Ont. (March 8, 2017) - Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey forward Andrew Fritsch was named the recipient of the West division Most Sportsmanlike Award on Wednesday as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced its major award winners and all-stars.

Fritsch, a third year forward who just completed his first season with the purple and gold after transferring from St. Thomas University, was also named an OUA Second Team All-Star following a very strong season for the Hawks.

The Brantford, Ont., native was recognized with the Most Sportsmanlike Award after taking just one minor penalty over the course of the entire 2016-17 regular season while appearing in all 28 of Laurier’s games. In his entire three-year U SPORTS career, Fritsch has only spent eight minutes total in the penalty box since the 2014-15 season.

Fritsch becomes the fifth Golden Hawk to receive the award since it was instituted back in the 1989-90 season and the first since Matt Grennier won the award in 2007-08. Other Laurier players who have received the award include Mark Voakes, Mike Dahle and current head coach GREG PUHALSKI.

The all-star recognition comes for Fritsch after finishing the year as Laurier’s leading scorer, recording 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points, and helping the Hawks to a third-place finish in the West division. In addition, the arts major led the team in game-winning goals with four and tied for first in shorthanded goals with one. He also added four goals on the powerplay, second best on the team

Fristch is the first Laurier player to earn all-star recognition since former goaltender Ryan Daniels was named an OUA First Team All-Star back in 2012-13.
