Laurier Grads Soar - John Morris
Laurier Grads Soar is a ten-part series that features former Wilfrid Laurier University varsity athletes and student-leaders in the Athletics and Recreation Department and the success they have enjoyed since leaving Laurier. Written by award-winning journalist David Grossman, a different feature will be released each week over a nine-week span that will emphasize the role Athletics and Recreation played in helping them achieve success.

JOHN MORRIS - 2010 Olympic Men's Curling Gold Medalist

When you meet JOHN MORRIS, clearly he leaves you with an impression of always appearing to be a step ahead of things, trying to make the best of his opportunities and wanting to make a difference.

Just glance through his accomplishments and Morris, a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Kinesiology Program and a multi-sport Golden Hawk, has one word that links his diverse interest: success.

Now living in Canmore, Alta., overlooking the picturesque Rocky Mountains,
Morris devotes his life to being a firefighter, also a certified holistic nutritionist and recently added to his portfolio the title of gourmet chef.

While at Laurier, he has a proud story of playing baseball and retiring with an impressive batting average of 1.000 after hitting a home run in his only at-bat appearance.

But Morris is at his best on the ice – as a sagacious curler.

Juggling academics with athletics, Morris twice competed at the World Junior Championship while at Laurier. He also won three medals, with his teammates, competing at the Ontario University Athletics championships and has great memories of the 2010 Winter Olympics earning a gold medal.

Have a conversation with Morris, about anything, and the talk always seems to end up with words about Laurier.

“It was a great place for me – just an incredible sense of school spirit whether it was Homecoming or even an intramural event,” recalled Morris. “I came from a small high school, researched Laurier, liked it being small where you knew the Professors, the educational experience was great and it was vital to my personal and career growth.”

Passionate about things and determined to achieve prosperity in whatever he does, Morris was acknowledged as one of the top 100 alumni in Laurier school history.
“I am honored to be recognized by Laurier,” he said. “People say that I live a busy life. It’s just that I am motivated, want to learn and do as much as I can to help people and also make a difference in the world.”

Busy as he is, an astute and affectionate Morris still finds time to devote to curling.

“I am working hard to reach my dream - compete at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea,” he said. “To get there, and compete for Canada, there is lots of hard work ahead. What I also find vital in life is to do what you love to do.”

NOTE: John is currently competing for Team BC at the 2017 Tim Horton's Brier in St. John's, Newfoundland.
