SWIM sending two to U SPORTS Championship
WATERLOO, Ont. (February 22, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks swim team will be sending two swimmers to this week’s U SPORTS Championship, hosted by the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, which get underway on Friday.

The three-day competition runs from February 24 to 26, with preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. ET and finals at 6 p.m. ET daily. Live results from all sessions will be available on the championship website and all evening finals will be webcast live on SportsCanada.TV

First year rookie standout Jasmine Raines of Kitchener, Ont., and fourth year veteran Kate Vanderbeek of Hamilton, will represent the purple and gold against the best university swimmers in the country during the course of the three day competition.

Raines enters the event as a medal contender in both the 100m and 200m Breaststroke events after she won gold in both races at the OUA Championships two weeks ago, becoming the first Golden Hawk since Whitney Rich in 2010 to win multiple gold medals at the conference championship.

The first year health sciences major set an OUA record in the 200m Breaststroke, winning gold in two minutes, 27.63 seconds, and followed that up with a time of 1:09.72 in the 100m. Raines will also compete in the 50m Breaststroke at nationals, an event she finished sixth in at the Ontario championship, as well as the 200m Individual Medley.

As for Vanderbeek, she heads to her fourth national championship where she will swim in the all three distances in the Backstroke, as well as the 200m Individual Medley and the 50m Butterfly. Her best result at the U SPORTS Championship came in her rookie year when she finished seventh in the 50m Backstroke, her specialty.

Vanderbeek is coming off a sixth place finish at the OUA Championship in the 50m Backstroke, thanks to a time of 29.50, and an eighth place showing in the 100m after a time of 1:03.74.

Laurier has not had an individual medalist at the national championship since Kristy MacLennan won bronze in the 200m Butterfly back in 2005.
