Laurier: 64 Lakehead: 45
THUNDER BAY, Ont. (February 19, 2017) – After a tight first half, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women’s basketball team stepped up their game in the second half, outscoring the Lakehead Thunderwolves 38-20 to pick up a 64-45 win at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.
Playing their final game of the regular season, the Hawks were strong defensively as they held the home team to just 21.4 percent shooting from the field and zero percent from three-point range on 19 attempts, to come away with their 13th win of the season.
Offensively, despite allowing 29 offensive rebounds to the Thunderwolves, leading to 12 more field goal attempts for Lakehead, a big game from the bench that saw Laurier outscore the Thunderwolves reserves 26-11 was the difference in the contest.
Both LAUREN JAMIESON
of Oakville, Ont., and Sarah Dillon
of Welland, Ont., chipped in with eight points off the bench while Nicole Morrison
of Hamilton, led all scorers with 14 points.
For Lakehead, Rachel Webber of Ancaster, Ont., posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite the win, the Hawks, who finished they year 13-7, were unable to hold on to the sixth seed in the OUA playoff standings as a win by the Ottawa Gee-Gees over the nationally-ranked Ryerson Rams dropped them down to seventh.
As a result, the purple and gold will host the 10th seeded Toronto Varsity Blues in the first round of the Critelli Cup playoffs on Wednesday, February 22.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Athletic Complex.
