PREVIEW: WBASK shoots to knock off Lakehead
Game Date/Time: Saturday, February 18 - 6 p.m.
Game Location: C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse, Thunder Bay
Live Webcast:

Entering their final game of the regular season, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (12-7) will be looking to build momentum as they head into the playoffs when they face the Lakehead Thunderwolves (7-10) on Saturday night.

Heading into the weekend, Laurier currently holds down the sixth seed in the OUA RPI standings, which determine playoff seeding. A win by the Hawks, combined with at least one loss from the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their final two games, will clinch the sixth seed for the purple and gold. Any other combination will see Laurier drop to seventh heading into the opening round of the conference playoffs on Wednesday, January 22.

- Laurier snapped a two-game losing streak last week thanks to a 72-59 win over division rivals, the Western Mustangs
- in that contest, fifth year guard Kaitlyn Schenck of Kitchener, Ont., became the third Laurier player to ever reach 1000 points and sits at 1012 for her career
- meanwhile, the Thunderwolves had their three-game win streak snapped last weekend as they lost a narrow 71-70 decision to Guelph
- Laurier won the last meeting between these two teams, 77-60 a year ago in Waterloo, and the Hawks hold a 26-22 margin in all-time matchups dating back to 1988
- a number of Hawks will be looking to solidify their place in Laurier’s single season Top 10 lists including:
- Schenck, who is just the fifth Laurier player to score 300 points in a single season, can move all the way up to third place on the list if she scores 17 or more points
- rookie guard Brianna Iannazzo of Thornhill, Ont., can become just the sixth Laurier player to ever hit 30 three pointers in a season if she makes one on Saturday
- Schneck, already number one on Laurier’s single season list for most free throws made, can move a couple of notches up the single season steals list as three steals would move her into the Top 10
- rookie Tayania Siwek-Smith of Oakville, Ont., can become just the second Golden Hawk to record 30 or more blocks in a season if she gets three against Lakehead
- guard NICOLE MORRISON of Hamilton, can surpass 70 assists this season, a feat that only four other Hawks have ever accomplished, with three assists on Saturday

Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (12-7)

- the fourth year guard led Laurier over the Thunderwolves in last year’s meeting, scoring 17 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists in Laurier’s win
- currently ranked sixth in OUA scoring, Morrison will be a handful for Lakehead to guard on Saturday

G Sarah Dillon (Welland, Ont.)
- fourth year guard was also a big part of Laurier’s victory over Lakehead a year ago, finishing with 12 points as she knocked down four three point attempts
- after finishing with seven points against Western last weekend, look for Dillon to be a key arsenal in the Hawks’ attack this weekend

Lakehead Thunderwolves (7-10)

F Bridget O’Reilly (Seaforth, Ont.)
- third year forward is the most dangerous of the Thunderwolves balanced offensive attack, averaging 11.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game

G Nikki Ylagan (Mississauga, Ont.)
- rookie guard has been very good coming off the bench for Lakehead this season, averaging 10.9 points per game while shooting almost 35 percent from three point range
