MFOOT to play preseason game vs Concordia
WATERLOO, Ont. (February 9, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team announced on Thursday that they will be facing the Concordia Stingers in a preseason game on Friday, August 18 at Concordia Stadium in Montreal.

This marks the third consecutive year that the Hawks will play a preseason game having also faced the Saskatchewan Huskies in 2015 and the Montreal Carabins in 2016.

The purple and gold head into the 2017 campaign as the defending Yates Cup Champions after a thrilling run through the OUA playoffs. Following a 7-1 regular season, the Hawks defeated the McMaster Marauders in the conference semifinals before staging the largest fourth quarter comeback in Yates Cup history to defeat the Western Mustangs 43-40 to capture their eighth Yates Cup.

Laurier would eventually see their playoff run come to an end in the Uteck Bowl when they lost to the Laval Rouge et Or.

As for Concordia, they are coming off a season in which they posted a 4-4 record in RSEQ play. Finishing third in their conference standings, the Stingers faced Laval in the semifinals, losing 39-14 to end their season.

“Concordia is a very athletic football team with a lot of speed,” said head coach MICHAEL FAULDS on the matchup. “They may not be talked about a ton playing in the same conference as Laval and Montreal, but they are well coached and will be a tough test for us.”

These two teams have faced each other seven times in the past with Laurier holding a 6-1 record against the Stingers. Their last meeting came in 1974 when Laurier posted a 21-10 win.

Laurier has lost both of their previous preseason matchups, falling 33-10 to the Huskies before dropping a narrow 37-33 decision to the Montreal Carabins a year ago.
