The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s basketball team will have a chance to take a big step closer Wednesday night to one of their most important season goals of capturing the OUA West Division. The Hawks (8-9) and the Windsor Lancers (8-8) have been fighting neck in neck the whole season to this point, and Wednesday’s game in Windsor could be the turning point for either team.

The Hawks defeated the Lancers at home in November in what turned out to be a thriller. The purple and gold will have to bring one of their best efforts, as Head Coach JUSTIN SERRESSE warns that Windsor is “a very different team than the one we played earlier in the year.” Serresse cites the additions of guards Luke Allin (Chatham, Ont.) and Mitch Farrell (Brechin, Ont.) to the lineup as key points of improvement for the Lancers. Defensive intensity will be critical to victory against a team that has scorers up and down the lineup.

A number of factors are going against the Hawks coming into this week. A flu bug is going around the room and a couple guys are banged up as well. Serresse does not want these factors to influence his team into playing with anything less than 100 percent effort for all 40 minutes.

This is especially true for senior’s night on Saturday against rivals Western (5-11), which the coach considers one of the most important games of the season for his team. Serresse won’t let the importance of giving the senior players a great final game at home be lost on his team, “we need to do it for the senior’s… the other guys need to step it up.” Control of the ball will be paramount for Laurier against Western’s tendency to press on defence.

-    Saturday’s home finale will not only be senior’s night but will also host the Alpha Omega Sorority’s ‘Hoops for Haven’ event with all proceeds going towards Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo
-    The Hawks will finish the regular season on Feb. 18 when they make the long trek north to take on Lakehead (4-11)
-    Western is coming off a two-for-two weekend in Sault Ste. Marie with consecutive wins over Algoma
-    Tickets to Saturday’s basketball will only be one dollar for all Laurier students!

Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (8-9)

G Tevaun Kokko (Markham, Ont.)
-    Kokko had a couple strong offensive efforts in the Hawks early season wins over Windsor and Western, he notably knocked down six of his nine triples against the Lancers
-    The freshman one-guard has become a go-to guy for the purple and gold this season. Laurier will need him more than ever this week in two pivotal games where the best players need to be the best players

Windsor Lancers (8-8)

G Mike Rocca (Sarnia, Ont.)
-    The senior guard is averaging 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game for the Lancers while leading his team in minutes played
-    The Hawks had the book on Rocca in their previous matchup against Windsor, completely shutting him out and will look to continue to keep him down

Western Mustangs (5-11)

G Eriq Jenkins (Windsor, Ont.)
-    Jenkins took control for the Mustangs in the Hawks double overtime thriller at Western back in November, going off for 26 points and 12 rebounds
