Laurier Grads Soar - Nicole Lee
Laurier Grads Soar is a nine-part series that features former Wilfrid Laurier University varsity athletes and student-leaders in the Athletics and Recreation Department and the success they have enjoyed since leaving Laurier. Written by award-winning journalist David Grossman, a different feature will be released each week over a nine-week span that will emphasize the role Athletics and Recreation played in helping them achieve success.

Nicole Lee - Director of Integrated Marketing, National Hockey League

Everyone wants to change the world for the better – and Nicole Lee is in that group.

Lee may not be an architect for global trade deals, but she is a bright and intellectual individual focused on a strong career in sports management.

She’s also quite astute, knows a great deal about corporate sponsorship, marketing and managing accounts – including those with the National Hockey League.

Lee has come a long way since those high school days in Acton, then shuffling off to study at Wilfrid Laurier University and graduating with an Honors Bachelors Degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education with a Business Administration Option.

Her thirst for education excellence wasn’t over.

It was then off to Athens, not Greece, but one of the oldest universities in the United States – for a few more years of academic studies that led to twin Masters Degrees in Business Administration and Sports from Ohio University

Now, it’s all about professional hockey.

Lee is not playing, but has an impressive portfolio and responsibility as Director of Integrated Marketing at the NHL. Previously, she held the position of Senior Manager.

“I wanted to be a physical and health education teacher and chose to study at Laurier,” said Lee, whose parents were teachers. “But Laurier is also where I started to learn so much about sports marketing, liked it and even worked for the university with my duties including visiting high schools.”
While at Laurier, Lee was a two-sport Golden Hawk varsity athlete participating in rugby and she did well in cross-country at the Ontario University Athletics championship.

Participating in sport was one thing, Lee also had a deep affection for all sectors of the university lifestyle.

A member of Laurier’s residence life staff, an athletic marketing and promotions assistant, she volunteered and assisted in a variety of events from the East-West football game to the Vanier Cup. Energetic and enthusiastic, the myriad of activities from Winter Carnival to Fashion in Motion, didn’t stop her from some incredible accomplishments in the classroom.

“Laurier was close to home – and, yes, my mom once went there, too,” she said. “It was a reputable educational institution with a strong academic program that interested me. I remember touring the campus for the first time, there was this sense of community and student life that appealed to me.”

One of Laurier’s influential women, Lee was a past recipient of the Esther Brandon Award given to a female student who contributed most to athletics.

Always respectful of her time at Laurier, Lee’s mandate now focuses on building strong NHL account portfolios and brand campaigns with corporate organizations like Molson Coors, Proctor and Gamble, VISA, Bridgestone and SiriusXM.
