WATERLOO, Ont. (January 23, 2017) - Men’s curling skip Jordie Lyon-Hatcher
of Ottawa, and women's basketball guard NICOLE MORRISON
of Hamilton, have been named the Laurier Hawk Shop Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 22, 2017.
Lyon-Hatcher, who filled in at skip for the Hawks in their first bonspiel of the season, was solid throughout Laurier’s four games as the purple and gold went 4-0 at the Brock Invitational. Shooting 78 percent over the course of the weekend, the second year psychology major was instrumental in helping the Hawks outscore their opposition 27-10, guiding Laurier to wins over Western (6-4), UOIT (8-2), RMC (7-2) and Brock (6-2).
Lyon-Hatcher earns Male Athlete of the Week honours for the first time this season and first time in his career.
Morrison, a fourth year communications studies major, returned from injury to help the purple and gold go 2-0 this past week. In her first game back, Morrison scored 21 points in just 22 minutes of playing time, while dishing out four assists and pulling down two rebounds, in a 73-57 win over Waterloo on Wednesday. She followed that performance up with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists to guide Laurier to a come-from-behind 74-67 win over Toronto. Morrison now ranks seventh in the OUA in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game.
This marks the fifth time in her career, and second time this season, that Morrison has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.
