BURLINGTON, Ont. (January 18, 2017) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team, the defending Yates Cup Champions, will open up their 2017 season on home field as Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced the 2017 football schedule on Wednesday.
The Hawks, who captured their eighth Yates Cup Championship back in November, will start defence of their title against the Toronto Varsity Blues at University Stadium on Sunday, August 27. It marks the second consecutive season that the purple and gold will open the year at Knight-Newbrough Field and features an opponent that Laurier owns a two-game winning streak against.
The Bye Week comes early for Laurier in 2017 as the Hawks will not play in Week 2, scheduled for Labour Day Monday around the league.
Week 3 will see the Hawks first stiff test of the season as they host the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, September 9. The Ravens were an OUA semifinalist a year ago and were ranked in the Top 10 in Canada for much of the season but it was the Hawks who were victorious against their Ottawa counterpart a year ago, earning a 17-16 win on the road.
Head Coach MICHAEL FAULDS
’ squad will be on the road in Week 4 as they head to Kingston to take on the Queen’s Gaels at the new Richardson Stadium. Laurier has won two straight meetings against the Gaels, including a 37-18 decision a year ago.
The Battle of Waterloo will be reignited in Week 5 as the Hawks take on the Waterloo Warriors at Warrior Field on Saturday, September 23. Laurier has won 13 straight games against their cross-town rivals, but with the Warriors recruiting hard under head coach Chris Bertoia the last few years, this game promises to be a good one.
The date that all Laurier fans will have circled on their calendar will be Week 6 as not only is it Homecoming weekend, but the Hawks will also be facing the Western Mustangs in a rematch of last November’s epic Yates Cup Championship game. Laurier ended a 13-game losing streak against the Mustangs in that contest, posting the largest fourth-quarter comeback in Yates Cup history, to pick up their first conference title since 2005.
Following Homecoming, the purple and gold will hit the road for their final two road games of the season in Weeks 7 and 8. The Hawks will take on the York Lions on Thanksgiving Weekend on Thursday, October 5, before heading across Highway 7 on Saturday, October 14 to battle the Guelph Gryphons.
Laurier closes out the regular season at University Stadium in Week 9 against the McMaster Marauders, a team that the Hawks beat in the OUA playoffs for the second consecutive year last season.
The Hawks’ two non-combatants for 2017 will be the Ottawa Gee-Gees and the Windsor Lancers.
Details on purchasing season tickets and single-game tickets for the 2017 season will be announced later this year. Stay tuned to laurierathletics.com for complete details.2017 Laurier Football Schedule
