WATERLOO, Ont. (December 13, 2016) - The Wilfrid Laurier University Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to officially announce the hirings of two new full-time staff members, DAWN SIMONS
and Courtney Bruce
Simons joins the department as the Events and Sponsorship Assistant and began in her new role at the end of October. Bruce was hired for the newly-created position of Athlete Services and Events Assistant and started her role at the end of November.
Simons starts in Athletics and Recreation on a full-time basis after working in the department as a co-op student while completing her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics. During her co-op placement, Simons assisted with the planning and execution of varsity sporting events as well as executing various fundraising events, including the Golf Classic, Outstanding Women of Laurier, the Friends of Football Dinner and Hall of Fame. She also assisted with ticket sales while working to foster potential sponsorship opportunities.
Her experience at Laurier also extended to working in Marketing and Events with the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics where she helped organize over 40 events, including Alumni Awards, Convocation, the Dean’s Golf Classic and business competitions.
In her new position with Athletics and Recreation, Simons will be responsible for, among other things, the planning of all external events, marketing, sponsorship activation and in-game promotions for varsity events.
“We are incredibly excited to add Dawn to our team,” stated Jon Kursikowski
, the Manager of Marketing and Events for Athletics and Recreation. “Her extensive events and marketing experience will be a tremendous asset to our department and she will play an important role in helping our group as we grow and continue developing new programs.”
“I am very excited to be starting my career with this new challenge at Laurier,” said Simons. “I enjoyed my time working for the department as a student and am grateful for the opportunity to continue contributing in a full-time capacity. Athletics and Recreation at Laurier has always been a passion of mine, and I look forward to joining such a strong, dedicated and accomplished staff in growing the success of the department.”
Bruce enters her new role following five years as a student-athlete with the Golden Hawks women’s basketball program. A Communications Studies graduate, Bruce was heavily involved with all aspects of the department during her time as a student, working at the Hawk Desk as well as serving as the Multi-Sport Camp Coordinator. She also volunteered her time as a member of the Lettermen Club Executive as with the varsity Captains’ Council.
Upon graduation in June 2016, Bruce took a contract position in Recruiting & Admissions with Wilfrid Laurier University where she served as a Domestic Recruiter, fostering key relationships and gaining extensive knowledge that will assist her in her new role.
In her new position, she will provide support and contact for over 500 varsity student-athletes as well as coaches in a variety of areas including apparel, equipment and uniform ordering, academics, team scheduling, recruiting, mentoring and varsity events.
“I am thrilled to have Courtney join our Interuniversity team here in Athletics and Recreation,” stated Ryan Lannan
, the Manager of Interuniversity Sport. “The breadth of Courtney’s experience is outstanding and will be a big asset to our department. The support and contact for our student-athletes and coaches will be increased with her addition and helps to ensure that we at Laurier are at the forefront of these initiatives and needs in order to grow the student-athlete experience.”
“It's with great excitement and enthusiasm I take on my new role,” said Bruce on joining the department. “The Laurier community, and more specifically, Athletics and Recreation, has provided me with enormous opportunities over the years. It was an absolute privilege to wear the purple and gold, and now it's my chance to give back and try to ensure the experience I enjoyed can be as worthwhile and everlasting to everyone else who puts on the Golden Hawk as it was for me.”
