TORONTO (December 8, 2016) - Patricia Kitchen, the Associate Director of Athletics and Recreation at Wilfrid Laurier University, was honoured with the HRH Prince Michael of Kent 125th Anniversary Certificate of Merit from the Royal Life Saving Society at a ceremony held at Queen’s Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Kitchen, who has worked in Athletics and Recreation since 2005, was one of 125 volunteers from across the Commonwealth to be honoured by the Royal Life Saving Society, and one of 23 from Canada. She was presented her recognition by the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
The recipients of this special award are individuals whose voluntary contribution and achievements have significantly impacted on the Royal Life Saving Society and its work, or represent the Society in an exemplary way, in particular in the fields of sport, youth and drowning prevention.

, Laurier’s Director of Athletics and Recreation on Kitchen’s award. “The achievement demonstrates that Pat’s tenure of leadership extends well beyond Laurier and throughout the Commonwealth.”
During her time with the Royal Life Saving Society, Kitchen has served in a number of roles at a provincial, national and international level. From 1998 through 2006, she served as Ontario Vice-President - Training Programs, President-elect, and President. Between 2001 and 2006, she managed the Canadian National Team for six world and Commonwealth lifesaving championships. In 2007, she began a five-year term as Lifesaving Society Canada Sport Commissioner. She was chef de mission to the 2008 world championship and the 2011 Commonwealth championships. In 2012, she assumed the role of International Relations Commissioner and Deputy Canadian Representative to the RLSS Commonwealth Management Committee.
Nominations for the award came from all across the Commonwealth countries including Australia, Cameroon, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, St. Lucia, and the United Kingdom.
