CHEER wins eighth national championship
Golden Hawks pull off two perfect routines to recapture PCA National Championship from Western
BRAMPTON, Ont. (November 29, 2016) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks cheerleading team, presented by The Marq, won their eighth national championship this past weekend as they were victorious at the 2016 PCA Nationals hosted at the Powerade Centre.
Laurier, who finished second a year ago behind the Western Mustangs, overcame their rivals with a pair of perfect performances to win their third national championship in the last four years.
“In my time with Laurier, including when I was an athlete on the team the first three years we won, I have never seen a more commanding or polished performance,” said head coach Jennifer Louth after the victory. “The team had a goal to redeem themselves after a disappointing Nationals in 2015, and the coaches could not be more proud of how they represented their school. If redemption is what they were looking for, they definitely succeeded in that.”
The Hawks opened the championships with a perfect run, scoring 226 points to hold an eight point margin over the Mustangs. Needing another solid performance in their second go through, Laurier repeated their perfection, scoring 226 again to hold off Western by 16 points.
The championship victory gets added to a list that has also seen the purple and gold rank as the best in Canada in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014.
